Microbiome 101

The organ you were never taught about.

Your gut hosts trillions of microorganisms - bacteria, fungi and other microbes collectively called the gut microbiome. Together they weigh about as much as your brain, and they participate in digestion, nutrient synthesis, immune signalling and even the production of neurotransmitter precursors. Modern research treats the microbiome less like a passenger and more like an organ in its own right.

What the microbiome does

  • Digestion & nutrients. Gut bacteria break down fibers your enzymes cannot, producing short-chain fatty acids that nourish the cells of your colon, and they participate in synthesising several B vitamins and vitamin K.
  • Barrier function. A balanced flora helps maintain the integrity of the intestinal lining — the barrier that decides what enters your bloodstream and what does not.
  • Immune education. A large share of your immune tissue is located around the gut. The microbes living there are in constant dialogue with it.
  • The gut–brain axis. The gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve, immune messengers and microbial metabolites — one reason gut comfort and mood so often move together.

What disturbs it

Ultra-processed diets low in fiber, chronic stress, disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms, excessive alcohol, and certain medications (notably repeated antibiotic courses) can all reduce microbial diversity — the hallmark of a resilient microbiome.

What supports it

  • Fiber diversity: aim for a wide variety of plants — diversity on the plate becomes diversity in the gut.
  • Fermented foods: yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi contribute live cultures.
  • Probiotics: studied strains, in meaningful amounts, with a delivery system that survives the stomach — the principle behind our GUT MANIFESTO formula.
  • Rhythm: regular meals, real sleep and time outdoors support the daily rhythms your microbes follow too.
